Mumbai, March 13: The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) that was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has reportedly been a huge hit, with 18 lakh enrolments in the past eight months. The announcement was made by Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (Independent Charge) and Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Pratap Rudy last week.The scheme is aimed at building skill development amongst the youth in a way that compliments the Make in India campaign that is a novel and ambitious initiative of the Modi government.

The announcement was made a few days after the Union Budget 2016 was presented. Rudy also announced that 50% of his skill budget will focus on job roles in rural area, reported the Times of India. “We had conducted 410 kaushal melas across 29 states reaching out to many who needed a direction with respect to employability and employment,” Rudy said. The creation of 1,500 Multi-Skill Training Institutes (MSTIs) as the new generation ITIs,  will ensure the required increase and capacity and scope of skill development . The MSTIs will be set up in a public private partnership mode, he said. The Institutes will be set up in the 2,500 blocks and districts of the country, which have minimum skill development and do not have adquate ITIs to meet the growing demand. The PMKVY was envisaged has a lot of significance for India, which has the world’s largest youth population that requires employable skills, which are imperative to the current government’s anti-poverty measures.
